Dunkleosteus was big—up to 10 metres long and weighed as much as three elephants. It was a powerful swimmer and the top predator of its time 365 million years ago during the Devonian Period. Although its bite was extremely powerful, Dunkleosteus had no teeth. Instead, the bones of its jaw formed jagged, self-sharpening razor-like edges made for cutting prey. See “Dunk” in our Palaeozoic Era exhibit!
